Call for proposals: ICPD Small Grants 2014

Civil society (CS) has a critical role to play in influencing government priorities and positions for the post-2015 regional and global negotiations. To ensure that CS engagement in these processes is strong, meaningful and has impact, IPPF is launching round two of a small grants facility. This fund will support CSOs who are working with their governments, at country level, to develop strong positions in support of sexual and reproductive health and rights.

UN Agency to support Odisha PTG Empowerment, Livelihood Improvement Programme

Bhubaneswar: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialised agency of the United Nations, has come forward to support the Odisha PTG Empowerment and Livelihood Improvement Programme (OPELIP). This eight-year-long programme would benefit 13 PVTGs living in 12 districts of the State and its cost would be nearly Rs800 crore ($ 130.3 million), of which the IFAD would contribute ($ 51.5 million), said official sources. Development Commissioner Aditya Prasad Padhi on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting where IFAD Mission Leader AM Alam presented an Aide-Memoire on the project. Commissioner-cum-Secretary, ST & SC Development Sanjeeb Kumar Mishra, Director, Tribal Affairs Akhil Bihari Ota, State Project Director of Odisha Tribal Empowerment and Livelihoods Programme (OTELP) Srikant Prusty and other concerned senior officials were present. It came to fore that 62,360 households including ST and SC and several other households would be benefitted from various interventions undertaken by the OPELIP. These would benefit all the 1,020 concerned villages and over 3,800 Self-Help Groups (SHGs), including the existing 1,027 SHGs, would be empowered and strengthened. The programme involves sustainable development and improvement of natural resources covering 20,000 hectares of arable land. Enhancing food security, improved food and livestock production of around 60,000 households would be achieved. The programme aims at increasing awareness of the PVTG community about entitlement and empowerment. In order to sustain the programme, all the programme interventions would be planned, designed and implemented by involving the targeted households from the beginning. Secondly, the community would be provided handholding support by associating the field NGOs, said an official. As the State Government is agreeing with the IFAD Mission, the programme would be presented to the Union Ministry of Economic Affairs for approval, said the sources. Earlier an IFAD Mission team spent more than a fortnight in Odisha and made an assessment of the whole situation which they intend to carry out further. –
